Free Web Hosting

by Ray Lam

Free web hosting can be very enticing to individuals and businesses that do not have enough money to afford good web hosting services. But is it something worth the time spent and efforts done?

Fortunately there are proven ways on how to determine the most suited web host for your requirements. First you have to do an extensive research. Gather as many information on free web hosting services. You can always do this by doing an online search at google or yahoo.

After compiling your list then decide the service that you want from a web host. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of availing the services of a particular web host. You might also want to ask around. Actually there are a lot of discussion forums on the Internet regarding free website hosting. Go around discussion boards and read. You can also ask people who have availed of free website hosting about their experiences in getting a free hosting service. This is a good way for you to learn about the pros as well as cons of getting such service.

Free web hosting also gave its users with sub domain name, making it almost impossible to be searched on in various search engines. This made most websites on free web host servers almost impossible to be found on search engines. Reliability was also a concern, troubling most business owners who availed of free website hosting. With all these problems arising, there"s little doubt that getting free website hosting is not that practical. It will not help websites particularly those selling products and services.

Remember, every free hosting firm will try to make money from your website. Look for a hosting firm, which is less intrusive and more reliable.

Sony Delivers Dolby Vision Update To Its X900F And A8F TVs

, Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

Sony has confirmed to me today that it’s finally started to roll out firmware updates in the US and Canada for its X900F (XF9005 in Europe) LCD and A8F (AF8 in Europe) OLED TVs that enable them to play the Dolby Vision HDR format.

The update - which unusually rolled out first in Europe first last week - enables Sony’s most recently released models for 2018 to play Dolby Vision titles via built-in video streaming apps, or over HDMI.

Please note, though, that as with the Dolby Vision support on Sony’s older models, Dolby Vision over HDMI only works if your source equipment has also received a necessary separate Sony compatibility firmware update.

Photo: Sony

The Sony A8F OLED TVs are now receiving Dolby Vision updates in the US, Canada and Europe.

Dolby Vision, for those of you not familiar with it, adds an extra ‘layer’ of scene by scene information to high dynamic range streams that enables TVs to display them more effectively. You will generally see, for instance, more contrast and enhanced color precision.

Hopefully the Dolby Vision update now rolling out to Sony’s newest X900F LCD (reviewed here) and A8F OLED (reviewed here) TVs will enhance their functionality without causing unwanted side effects of the sort that have plagued the firmware’s roll out on older Sony models (as reported here). Hopefully, too, Dolby Vision support will be built in at launch to Sony’s recently leaked A9 OLED and ZF9 high-end LCD TVs. Especially if these up and comers support Sony’s teased-at-CES X1 Ultimate processing system.

Galaxy S10 Leak Reveals Samsung's Radical Breakthrough

, Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

While the upcoming Galaxy Note9 phablet is not expected to be anything more than an iterative update on the existing hardware, the real leap forward according to all reports is going to come with the Galaxy S10. The latest reports out of South Korea suggest one of the advanced technologies is now finally ready for widespread consumer adoption.

That technology is the oft-discussed under-the-screen fingerprint reader. While a number of small-run handsets have demonstrated this biometric ability, Samsung has been seen to shy away from putting it in its handsets which have much larger production runs and demand far higher yield rates at scale. As SamMobile reports, the go/no-go point has been reached, and all the indications are that the South Korean company has decided to make the call:

The impression we get from recent reports is that the company has made a final decision on the matter.

The latest report claims that Samsung has “confirmed” to its industry partners that it has decided to adopt the in-display fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S10. The display panel will be supplied by Samsung Display whereas Qualcomm is said to be supplying the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

The inclusion of the technology in the tenth major Galaxy S handset would be a strong statement of intent that the Galaxy brand is still one that can have an impact in the smartphone world. The Galaxy S9 (and arguably the S8 family before it) have been iterative builds, improving the specifications and techniques used in previous flagships without breaking any genuine new ground.

While Chinese manufacturer Vivo might scoff, Samsung would be seen as the first to bring this to the mainstream. And there;s every chance that the launch of the Galaxy S10 will be one of the big smartphone firsts of 2019 if  Samsung brings the reveal forwards to CES in January. The early display of the S10 would see the company anointed as one of change, and leave Mobile World Congress open for the foldable Galaxy X to confirm that role.

Now read more about Samsung’s accelerated launch schedule for the Note9, S10, and Galaxy X…

If Elon Musk Had Lived 500 Years Ago, This Is The Audacious (and Profitable) Venture He Probably Would Have Launched

In the early 1500s, England faced an existential economic crisis: Demand for their most lucrative export, woolen cloth, was plunging in Europe. They needed to find new markets for their product --and fast.

So a group of merchants set their sights on the vast market of Cathay --the word used at the time to refer to China --then the largest economy in the world, with nearly 30 percent of global GDP. (By comparison, India during this period produced roughly 20-25 percent of global GDP. England was peripheral to the world economy, producing an inconsequential 1 percent of global GDP.)

These English merchants sent expeditions in search of a new overland sea route that, they hoped, would take them over the European continent to China, enabling them to avoid having to sail through waters controlled by the Spanish and the Portuguese, their arch rivals.

After failing to reach Cathay (though they did make it as far as Moscow), they decided to turn westward, eventually reaching the shores of America, where they established small trading outposts and, eventually, full-fledged colonies.

This is how the tale begins in a captivating new book by Simon Targett and John Butman, New World, Inc.: The Making of America by England"s Merchant Adventurers. Through meticulous research and a flair for bringing a colorful cast of long-deceased characters back to life, Targett and Butman tell the story of the founding of one of history"s most successful startups: America.

"It"s the "prequel" to the Pilgrims," Targett told me in a recent podcast conversation. "You can"t really understand America today if you only go as far back as the Pilgrims. Of course they are an important part of the founding. But there were many trips for 70 years before the Pilgrims, who eventually arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. As we delved further, we tracked and traced an unbroken chain of voyages. And we felt the story of these merchant adventurers --what we call the "forgotten founders" -- provide a better narrative."

Targett and Butman relate the fascinating and largely untold story of the earliest days of globalization, of innovation and entrepreneurial risk-taking, and of the creation of some of the earliest venture-financed companies in the world.

"What they did initially was to setup a company," explains Targett. "This we think of as perhaps the forefrunner of all modern corporations. It was called "The Mysterie, Company, and Fellowship of Merchant Adventurers for the Discovery of Regions, Dominions, Islands, and Places Unknown.""

This was a period when the newly-coined word, "company," was just starting to become a part of the English language. In a fascinating bit of etymology, Targett explains how the word was formed through the conjunction of the Latin words, "com," meaning "together," and "panis," meaning, "bread." Together, the word loosely means, "the breaking of bread together."

Of course, English merchants had supported and funded voyages for decades, and these had often been funded either by private individuals or private syndicates. "But the idea of going across the world required a higher level of organization and financing, so they set up this company which not only allowed them to pool their resources, but also allowed them to attract their resources from people who didn"t want to get involved in the mundane running of company."

Like the startups of today, most of which are statistically prone to flop, failure was very much a part of the story. "It"s remarkable how many setbacks these people experienced and yet they continued to believe there was a pot of gold or a fortune to be made at the end of it," observes Targett. "And, in a way, that driving spirit was key to these people. It"s another feature of a modern America that we feel needs to be traced back to before the Pilgrims."

Targett compares these risk-taking, adventurous "forgotten founders" of 16th and 17th-century England to one of the boldest entrepreneurs of our era, Elon Musk. "To some extent the people that we write about, these "forgotten founders," were venture capitalists. They were very much the Elon Musks of their day. Just as he is dreaming of new worlds, in his case Mars, their new world was America. And he"s pulling together some of the best minds to help him design some of the rockets and the spaceships that will be needed. Likewise, the merchants pulled together the very best minds of their days, the scientists, the navigators, the buccaneers, the marketers."

"These "forgotten founders" and the people they sent across were the first people to really experience and live the American dream. These were the people that often went across with nothing but made their place and made their home. They didn"t all make fortunes but they found a life, they found a place in society."

Apple cuts smartphone power chip orders from Dialog Semiconductor

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Dialog Semiconductor said Apple now planned to source the main power management chips (PMICs) for one of its three new iPhone models from two suppliers instead of just from the German chipmaker.

FILE PHOTO: Dialog semiconductor logo is pictured at a company building in Germering near Munich, Germany August 15, 2016. REUTERS/Michaela Rehle

That means that Apple will order 30 percent fewer of the chips from Dialog this year than it had initially expected, Dialog said in a statement on Thursday.

The news sent its shares 3.9 percent lower in late Frankfurt trade. Dialog’s stock has lost more than half of its value over the past year on investor concerns that Apple is working on its own battery-saving chips for iPhones.

Analysts reckon Dialog derives more than half its revenue from supplying Apple with PMICs.

The reduced order volume for the PMICs will shave 5 percent off the chipmaker’s 2018 revenues, but Dialog said it still expected its 2018 revenues to grow year-on-year.

The impact on 2019 revenues is likely to be similar, Chief Executive Jalal Bagherli told analysts on a conference call.

He said Apple had not provided a reason for the change in its sourcing of chips.

“If you think about the fact that we are qualified for all three phones, that means there is no performance-related issue. It might be a statement of intent to reduce risk on having one supplier and have an alternative source,” he said.

He also said Apple had not told him who the second, new supplier of the main PMICs was but said he saw it as very likely that it was an in-house source at Apple.

Apple did not change the projected order volume for the other power management chip that Dialog is supplying for the new iPhone models - the sub-PMIC - nor for all other PMICs, including those for tablets, wearables and notebooks.

Dialog said it would continue to explore new mixed-signal opportunities outside of power management for future Apple products.

Walmart acquiring India's Flipkart, says SoftBank's Son

MUMBAI/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Walmart Inc (WMT.N) has agreed to pay $16 billion for a roughly 77 percent stake in Indian online shopping site Flipkart, the U.S. retailer’s biggest foreign investment as it battles rival Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) in one of the world’s biggest emerging markets.

FILE PHOTO: The logo of India"s e-commerce firm Flipkart is seen on the company"s office in Bengaluru, India April 12, 2018. REUTERS/Abhishek N. Chinnappa/File Photo

The deal, capping almost two years of talks, will help the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer fortify and boost market share against Amazon.com, which reportedly had tried to make a competing offer for a stake.

“India is one of the most attractive retail markets in the world, given its size and growth rate, and our investment is an opportunity to partner with the company that is leading transformation of e-commerce in the market,” Doug McMillon, Walmart’s Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement on Wednesday.

Buying a stake in Flipkart, which sells everything from soaps to smartphones and from books to clothes, gives Walmart access to the fledgling Indian e-commerce market that could potentially be worth $200 billion in a decade, according to Morgan Stanley.

Walmart said it plans to fund the deal through a combination of newly-issued debt and cash on hand.

Walmart warned that it expects the deal to hit its fiscal 2019 earnings per share by 25 cents to 30 cents, if the deal closes as expected before the end of the second quarter.

The remainder of the business will be held by some of Flipkart’s existing shareholders, including Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal, China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd (0700.HK), Tiger Global Management LLC and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), the company said.

Earlier on Wednesday, SoftBank (9984.T) Chief Executive Officer Masayoshi Son unexpectedly spilled the beans on the deal by confirming on a conference call that Walmart had decided to purchase Flipkart, ahead of the highly-anticipated official announcement.

Son said his firm’s investment in the Indian online retailer had grown to $4 billion. SoftBank’s Vision Fund, the world’s biggest private equity fund, had invested $2.5 billion in Flipkart last August.

Sources have previously told Reuters that SoftBank would sell all its shares in Flipkart to Walmart.

Data Sheet—What AI Will Do to the Financial System

Will they or won’t they? Two of the biggest tech startups are teasing about going public…in 2019. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, speaking at the Code Conference on Wednesday, said his company “will be ready to IPO next year, but I don’t know if we will.” And Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told CNBC his company is “on track” to go public in 2019, as well. “Lots of things can happen in the world but we have a reasonable buffer as well, so I think we’re in a pretty good spot,” he said.

It happens every year. Famed Internet analyst Mary Meeker issued her annual slide deck of Internet metrics. The 294-page presentation noted that smartphone sales have leveled off while smart speaker sales are exploding, albeit from a small base. Meeker also showed how Chinese tech companies are growing fast and entering fields like AI.

Coming into focus. Speaking of Chinese AI companies, SenseTime, a Chinese startup focused on using AI for image recognition, raised $620 million of venture capital in a deal valuing the company at $4.5 billion. The company says its software has been used in over 100 million mobile devices from China.

High hurdles. The California state Senate voted to maintain strict net neutrality rules similar to those that the Federal Communications Commission imposed in 2015 and repealed last year. The bill must next pass the state Assembly, where an earlier proposal died in January.

Double platinum. A couple of personnel moves at Apple Music have the record industry talking. After putting Oliver Schusser in charge of the service last month, Apple named Elena Segal as global director of music publishing. Getting into the publishing side of music could allow Apple to gain rights more quickly, or even set up its own record label, speculates Rolling Stone.

Turn up the volume. In what seems like a strange turn of events, headphone maker Monster filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to issue up to $300 million of its own digital currency coins, dubbed Monster Money Tokens, that would be convertible into company stock. Sales at the company slipped 34% to $57 million last year, generating a net loss of $27 million.

The trend is your friend. Speaking of digital currencies, bitcoin set an all-time high close to $20,000 just before the Chicago Mercantile Exchange started trading bitcoin futures contracts. It has since fallen precipitously, trading under $8,000 now. But that’s completely typical behavior for a commodity price when derivatives contracts begin trading, according to a new study released by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. As with home mortgages and other instruments, early on investors have no reliable way to bet against the commodity, so prices rise dramatically. The arrival of futures trading allow pessimists finally to place their bets, driving down the price.

Android Jeff. At the annual shareholder meeting of Amazon, held on Wednesday in Seattle, several small groups gathered outside to protest. One group carried a huge mock robot with the face of Jeff Bezos, as they protested in favor of a proposal to increase oversight of the company via an independent board chairman. Shareholders rejected the plan. Bezos, who founded the e-commerce giant in 1994, holds both the positions of CEO and board chairman.

Performance, Technology, Culture, Brand: Why Lexus Went Back To the Track

I"ve probably seen hundreds of Lexus ads over the years. Given "Lexus TV commercial" as a free association prompt, the "December to Remember" campaign immediately springs to mind.

That"s a good thing, since memorability matters in advertising.

But that doesn"t mean I"ve ever considered buying a Lexus sedan. All those ads I"ve consumed hadn"t budged my purchase consideration needle from zero -- even though, having owned two Lexus SUVs, my brand affinity is well established.

Then I saw a Lexus RC F GT3 racing in the GTD class at the IMSA Rolex 24 in January. (Take a look at this photo and tell me it"s not an awesome-looking race car.) Then I took a tire-smoking, brake-glowing ride in a Lexus GS F driven by an ex-professional racer on the Daytona road course. Then, just one year after entering the series, the program notched its first win at Mid-Ohio last month

Now would I consider buying a Lexus sedan? Oh, hell yeah.

That"s why 17 manufacturers are actively involved in IMSA and 13 of them compete full-time in the WeatherTech Championship. Racing does something for the Lexus brand -- at least for potential customers like me -- that no of advertising will ever accomplish.

Even so, advertising has the benefit of being relatively simple: Develop a strategy, throw money at a campaign... advertising is easy (although hard to do well.)

To find out why Lexus decided to re-engage in racing I talked with Jeff Bracken, the Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager who oversees all aspects of U.S. automotive operations. (He"s retiring later this year after 40 years with Toyota -- awesome for him but less so for me since he offered me a test-ride in a Lexus LFA the next time I"m in Dallas.)

Small business or major brand, there should be a strategy behind every marketing initiative. So: Why racing?

Before I answer, let me ask you a question. When you think of Lexus, what comes to mind?

There are two answers to that question. Until today I would have said Lexus is a definitely a luxury brand... but not necessarily a performance brand. Then I took a ride with one of your pro drivers. I had no idea the car could do that.

That"s the perfect answer: You had no idea. And that"s one of the reasons we"re in IMSA.

When the general public thinks about Lexus, they think quality, they think styling, they think  dealers who really take care of you... We love that about our brand image. But it"s not enough.

We want to be known for more: For performance, for driving dynamics, for personality... all of the things that truly speak to our vehicles.

We know that gap currently exists. Racing is a great way to help the public understand that there is more to Lexus than what they may be familiar with.

I get wanting to be in racing. But there are a number of series and options. Why IMSA, and why the GTD class?

We wanted a series where people could see a car they"re actually able to buy on the racetrack. We want that natural connection.

Of course we could have entered the prototype class, but for us that seemed like a less natural market connection. At least for now.

So it"s a little like bicycles. I can buy a Trek road bike that looks like what their pros ride in the Tour de France.

Yes. And of course it goes beyond the end customer. Our dealers are also customers.

We can talk about racing at a national dealer meeting, or in smaller meetings... but when we bring them to the track, it"s visceral. They can see and hear and smell... it"s a very exciting environment, and it"s exciting for them to be part of.

 [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjMQgY_qhg4?start=9932]

That"s why we have a number of our dealers and key opinion leaders here this weekend to see it firsthand.

Do some dealers push back and say, "Wait. Why are we in racing? Why not spend that money on another marketing strategy?"

We do get that question. One thing we do is assure them the transfer of what we learn on the track to our production vehicles is very, very real.

One example is our design studios. Designers and engineers work on aerodynamics, driving dynamics, etc. The young engineers in Japan that literally designed this race car will eventually design production cars. The knowledge transfer is seamless.

So, when a dealer expresses concern over, say, whether money is being taken away from general marketing funds, we can walk them through the technology transfer aspect, the image building aspect...

Ultimately, they just want to know money is well spent, and we work extremely hard to make sure it is.

A friend"s bicycle company is involved in racing, but to him participation alone is  enough. For Lexus, how important is winning?

We"re not here to make up the numbers. We"re here to win.

Of course that was hard in our inaugural season. We were starting from scratch and competing with extremely well-established teams. So to not win a race... we"re competitive people. We didn"t like that.

But at the same time, we"re in this for the long haul. Our company culture is to take a long-term view.

We made a lot of progress last year. This year we think our cars are as fast as any out there. But we"ve been away for a decade and there are phenomenally talented competitors that have been at this for a long, long time. So we have high expectations -- but not unrealistic expectations.

That"s important whenever you get involved in something new: The balance between high expectations and realistic expectations is key when you"re trying to maintain excitement and enthusiasm... but at the same time not risk your people getting demoralized.

We talked about the branding gap. Whenever a brand shifts, even slightly, there"s a risk that a certain segment of the core customer base won"t like it.

Absolutely. We have owners that over the years have bought 10 Lexus vehicles, and when they see us taking a more aggressive approach to styling... yes, I do take calls from customers who express concern.

So I"ll spend 30 or 40 minutes on the phone with them, helping them understand why we"re going down this path.

We never want to lose those baby boomers. We never want to lose the people who have a more traditional view of how our cars should look or perform. But at the same time, if we don"t stretch ourselves, we will never be on the consideration list for Gen X, Gen Y, Millennials...

But you"re right. That"s a tough balance because, whatever your business, you have a core base... and when you try to extend past that core, the core may start to look sideways at you. (Laughs.)

But that"s also where brand loyalty comes in.

Clearly the vehicle itself is the primary point of interest. But so much of the Lexus DNA is how we take care of customers. The amount of money we spend on customer goodwill is significant even by comparison to our big brother Toyota.

So we hope that if there is a tiny bit of a disconnect on, say, how a new vehicle is styled... our customers know they will be taken care of.

We know that matters. We"ve seen customers leave... and then come back primarily due to they way they know Lexus treats them.

You"re a year in to being back on the track. What turned out to be different than you expected? What have you learned?

From a marketing standpoint, we"re definitely building awareness and word of mouth just by being involved in motor sports. That aspect has gone as planned.

And we"ve definitely learned a lot about working with our race teams. Take 3GT Racing (the team that won the Mid-Ohio race.) We think very, very highly of them. They"re used to maintaining a tremendous amount of control; giving up some of that control goes against their DNA.

That"s not unusual in racing; many teams are used to only getting minimal support from whatever factory they happen to affiliate with.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AULJUImekX0]

And while we do have tons of resources we can provide, we needed to make sure there wasn"t a heavy-handed approach from the factory.

There was a learning curve for both organizations, one that we anticipated... and we feel really good about how that relationship has come together.

So in a broader sense, if you"re a company planning to partner with someone, know that it will take effort to build a great relationship.

And know the effort you put building a great relationship will be worth it.

I"m sure that"s true inside Lexus as well. Effort becomes its own reward when it helps build the right culture.

No matter what we"re doing or where we"re doing it... we feel our performance is never, ever good enough. That"s another thing that"s hard-wired into our DNA.

Being involved in racing provides a constant reminder that whatever makes you successful today just won"t be good enough tomorrow.

Reinforcing our constant drive for excellence? That"s a "win" that pays off beyond any results on the track.

Need Another Reason to Head Outdoors? Science Says It'll Give You a Major Productivity Boost

Now that we"re halfway through the year, those new year"s resolutions might be out of commission and a new whiff of inspiration is in order. Whether work or life is bogging you down, you don"t have to take a big trip or drastically change your life to feel new.

In fact, a reset button might just be around the corner (or a day trip away). This summer, I challenge you to step outside of your box and head into nature to get that fresh, new perspective. In fact, science says you should do it. Depending on what kind of reset you need, head to one (or all) of the following three places.

Water: to Lower Stress and Anxiety

What do you think of when you hear water? Beach, lake, river, pond, waterfall, ocean, or maybe something else? Wallace J. Nichols, Ph.D., is a marine biologist and the author of Blue Mind, a book that discusses the benefits of water. No, not just drinking it.

He calls it blue mind, described as, "the mildly meditative state we fall into when near, in, on, or under water." By surrounding ourselves with water, Nichols has found that your stress and anxiety levels can lower, a perfect way to calm down if you"ve had an especially trying week at work or need to find clarity to a chronic issue.

Forest: To Boot Your Immune System and Improve Mood

In 1982, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries coined the word "shinrin-yoku," meaning forest bathing. They were already a hundred steps ahead of me. They discovered that breathing in the fresh forest air meant you were also inhaling phytoncides, a natural and airborne chemical that helps plant fight off disease. By breathing this in, you in turn, would develop a stronger immune system.

In another study also led by Japanese researchers at Chiba University, 168 participants were sent out on a stroll. Half walked through the forest while the other half walked the city streets. Those that went in the forest showed a 16 percent decrease in cortisol (the stress hormone), two percent decrease in blood pressure, and a four percent decrease in heart rate.

Mountains: to See the Same Thing From a New Perspective

Two years ago, I did the famous Half Dome hike in Yosemite National Park. This 16-mile and 12-hour hike was a grueling experience that left me wondering why I was doing it in the first place. The first few miles of the hike runs you through beautiful Vernal Falls, a majestic waterfall that mists you as you hike up its adjacent steps. Beyond this point and to the base of the mountain seems like a dizzying maze of thinking you"re almost done, but no, that"s still Half Dome but from the other side.

It wasn"t until I ascended up the cables and onto the top of the mountain, taking in a breathtaking view, that I realized it really is all about the journey. Any troubles I had maintained during the hike disappeared as I took in the view from up top. There, I saw all the other domes I had seen from the ground but from here, they sparkled in a way I could have never seen six hours earlier.

To gain a new perspective, you have to move.

It"s no surprise that getting yourself outdoors is the number one thing to do to feel better. Away from the distraction of noise, people, and problems, you also get the sense of feeling small and that life"s pressures are overrated. Compared to large bodies of water, towering hundred-year-old redwoods, or large granite forms, you are humbly reminded that things are never as they seem.

NetApp Opens Data-Driven Bangalore Campus In Push For APAC Cloud Customers

It’s slightly disorienting when NetApp executives talk about hybrid cloud data services. Traditionally a data storage player, NetApp, one of America"s largest public companies, has transformed itself to become a data authority in the hybrid cloud world.

The company, with a market cap of $11.1 billion, now provides a full range of hybrid cloud data services that simplify management of applications and data across cloud and on-premises environments to accelerate digital transformation.

Earlier this month, the company unveiled a new Data Visionary Engineering Center (DVEC) in India to empower Asia-Pacific customers and partners to collaborate, innovate, educate and drive digital transformation across Asia-Pacific.

Located within the NetApp Global Center of Excellence in the company’s sprawling Bangalore campus, the new APAC DVEC offers an interactive, high-touch experience to its customers and partners.

The DVEC in Bangalore joins three other such DVECs–one at the company’s global headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, one in North Carolina and another at the company’s European headquarters in Amsterdam. With the first such center in the Asia Pacific region, the company aims to empower APAC customers and partners to transform the world with data.

Who is a Data Visionary?

When I met the senior executives of NetApp on the sidelines of the inauguration, Anil Valluri, President, NetApp India & SAARC, introduced me to the concept of a "data visionary."

“He’s a CDO (Chief Data Officer) or a CIO (Chief Information Officer)… someone who has insights and access to data,” he explains. "Data-driven digital transformation accelerates business outcomes."

NetApp believes that today’s leaders will have to become data visionaries in order to transform their organizations, create new customer touchpoints, innovate to take advantage of market opportunities and optimize operations. The DVEC will allow these data visionaries to experience NetApp’s latest products and services in a real-time problem-solving scenario.

The Indian market

Deepak Visweswaraiah, Vice President & Managing Director, NetApp India explained why the company chose Bangalore, a city dubbed as the Silicon Valley of India, for its first DVEC in the Asia-Pacific region.

The NetApp campus in Bangalore is the company’s largest center outside of the United States and has go-to-market capability, large engineering capacity, senior engineering and management talent, as well as large support functions. End-to-end, several products have been conceived, developed, and delivered out of the Bangalore campus.

According to Visweswaraiah, while already a Global Centre of Excellence, the DVEC was the last missing piece in the puzzle to make the Bangalore campus a microcosm of NetApp HQ in a way.

The DVEC aims to bridge the gap between business and IT and allows organizations to discuss robust solutions that aid transformation, accelerate growth and reduce costs. “Bangalore has engineering facilities of global organizations like Qualcomm, Boeing, Airbus, so on and so forth, and hence the city’s a great choice for the first DVEC in the region,” Anil added. It"s a testimony of the vibrancy of the market and the large pool of engineering talent in the country.

India is a big market for NetApp and growing at 6-8% year-on-year according to the company. There’s obviously a lot of activity around cloud because of the thriving startup ecosystem and the enterprising finance sector.

The third biggest reason is the multiple billions of dollars that the government of India is spending on digital transformation. Traditionally, India"s government spends less than 1% of its Gross Development Product (GDP) on citizen services, however, this has increased to the global standard of 2-2.5% now, of which data storage and management is a big part.

All this while, banks have been averse to adopting cloud because of regulatory issues and security concerns. But increasingly, while they continue to have their internet banking and anti-money laundering infrastructure on-premise, they’ve offloaded activities like marketing campaigns to the public cloud since the latter does not require customers’ financial information.

According to Anil, most organizations in India have this style of hybrid approach.

One of the company’s largest customers is the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and is completely on-premise. Much of the country’s space agency’s data would be presumably classified information. Similarly, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has seismic data that they host on-premise, although they archive some data in the cloud.

Then there’s a new age bank like IDFC Bank that has gone partially to the cloud and envisions moving further to the cloud. Of course, there are some startups that are completely in the cloud since the pay-per-use approach works in favor of early-stage startups from a cost perspective.

"Cloud-first"

When Deepak called NetApp a "cloud-first" company, I interjected and said it was surprising to hear a data storage and management company positioning itself as a cloud company. Even though cloud was a threat to pure-storage players like NetApp, “instead of turning away from the cloud, we ran to the cloud,” Deepak asserts.

NetApp, in more ways than one, is a data company--irrespective of whether that data is stored on flash storage within the walls of an organization or on a public cloud infrastructure. With its 25-year legacy of managing data, the company now aims to help its customers and partners in India and APAC at its Data Visionary Engineering Center to embrace the opportunities presented by new technologies.

SoftBank Vision Fund will invest $2.25 billion in GM Cruise Holdings, the automaker"s self-driving car unit, to help commercialize GM"s autonomous vehicle technology in a large-scale fleet starting next year.

GM is also investing $1.1 billion in GM Cruise, strengthening its commitment to bringing self-driving cars to market in a big way.

"Our Cruise and GM teams together have made tremendous progress over the last two years," said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. "Teaming up with SoftBank adds an additional strong partner as we pursue our vision of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion."

SoftBank Vision Fund, the world"s largest technology investment fund, is a major player in the fast-developing field of autonomous vehicles and will now own 19.6 percent of GM Cruise.

"GM has made significant progress toward realizing the dream of completely automated driving to dramatically reduce fatalities, emissions and congestions," said Michael Ronen, managing partner of SoftBank Investment Advisers. "The GM Cruise approach of a fully integrated hardware and software stack gives it a unique competitive advantage. We are very impressed by the advances made by the Cruise and GM teams, and are thrilled to help them lead a historic transformation of the automobile industry."

GM President Dan Ammann said the automaker is excited to join forces with a tech leader that shares GM"s view of how AV technology will change the world.

The deal is subject to regulatory approval. SoftBank Vision Fund will invest $900 million when the deal closes, and the remaining $1.35 billion when Cruise AVs are ready for commercial deployment, expected in 2019.

Determining The Return On Investment On A New Software Purchase

There"s no way around it: Companies often need the most modern software. Yet software costs money, something most companies don"t have excess amounts of lying around.

To make purchases more appealing to stakeholders and decision makers, you may need to calculate the software"s return on investment. However, this is a complicated calculation -- it"s important to get it right so you can rest assured your company will be investing its money wisely.

Don"t make a poor estimate that might damage your stakeholders" trust in you or even result in a bad decision. Follow these guidelines to learn how to calculate the return on investment for your software purchase in a straightforward, accurate way.

What Is Return On Investment?

A return on investment, or ROI, isn"t an abstract term. It"s a specific calculation of an investment"s cost versus its benefit. ROI is always calculated the same way, whether it"s for software or anything else.

The formula used to calculate ROI is as follows:

ROI = (Gain of Investment) - (Cost of Investment) / (Cost of Investment)

Let"s break down the two components of this calculation, one at a time, and consider how they relate to software purchases in the health care or pharmacy fields.

Gain Of Investment

Your gain of investment is the amount of money you stand to gain from implementing the new software system. In some lines of work, the gain is easy to calculate. For instance, if a retail store opens an online storefront, it will almost certainly see an increase in its sales.

In the pharmacy or health care business, you won"t see a clear increase in revenue. What you"re more likely to see is a decrease in costs.

For instance, many health care providers and pharmacies have obligations to regulators. If they don"t adhere to regulations, they may end up with a fine. Many software packages offer safeguards to make sure companies adhere to all regulatory requirements, thus reducing the likelihood of these fines. The money you don"t pay out in fines would be a gain in investment.

Likewise, many software packages have features that will help you do the work you already do more efficiently. The time you save, and the extra work you"re able to take on as a result, represents another part of the money you gain.

Finally, remember that for most companies, your new software will replace an old system. That old system cost you money, whether it"s through licensing fees for the software you used or the smaller costs associated with an old-fashioned pen-and-paper record system. You can factor the money you"re not spending on the system into the gain of investment.
